Why Make Your Own Sunscreen?

Running a sunscreen applicator business has opened our eyes to how crucial daily sun protection is. Even getting sunburned once will increase your risk of melanoma.  Here at BlokRok we are also huge advocates of natural and organic sunscreens and their use in our applicators. While we love natural brands like Badger Balm, Alba Botanica and Jason, we thought we would take a stab at making our own lotion formula.

We have tested a number of recipes for homemade sunscreen and have finally found our favorite by Skim Baco Lifestyle. This recipe only calls for 4 ingredients and is the easiest recipe we've made so far (it only has one step- mixing everything together!)  Additionally, this recipe uses all natural oils and essential oils leaving our skin feeling protected, hydrated and smelling great! Try it out for yourself!

1/3 cup Coconut Oil
2 teaspoons Avocado Oil
25 drops Carrot Seed Essential Oil
10 drops Lavender Essential Oil

Mix all ingredients into a mixing bowl and mix at medium speed for a few minutes until well blended.

Store your lotion in a glass container in a cool dark place. We used an old salsa jar for ours...And while the sun lotion will look like whipped cream when done, don’t worry if it changes consistency when you use it outside. Coconut oil is solid under 76 °F, and above that temperature it turns into olive oil-looking liquid oil.
