We Sit a lot. At work, in the car, on the couch, And tight hips are the scourge of sitters.
Tight muscles aside, great hip mobility is beneficial when it comes to allowing your body to have the full range of motion it should. “If our hips aren't able to flex and move in the way our bodies intend them to, they don't become as useful as they should be, which means a lot of the load will fall onto your lower back,” says Heidi Jones, Head Coach at Brick New York. “This creates problems over time.” And your hips are 100 percent designed to generate a ton of power.
Check out these basic (but brilliant) poses from PopSugar to open your hips and stretch you out. These poses can help both stretch and strengthen your hips, but keep in mind when moving through them to listen to that internal voice of your body that tells you if you are in pain or just feeling a stretch. A stretch may feel a little sore, but inevitably it feels like a release of tension. When you feel sharp pain, back out of the pose and consider using a prop or moving on to another stretch.
Take advantage of your downtime over the holidays and practice some of these stretches, your hips will thank you!
